Different worlds

I am back in Asia, KL.

Malaysia is buoyant and wealthy, and has moved towards a pluralist culture based on a vibrant and interesting fusion of Malay, Chinese, Indian and indigenous cultures and customs. Chinese newyear is about to come up on Febuary 7th and 8th. The streets are decorated with chinese lanterns, really nice to see in the evening. It adds a lot of coulour. And of these religions are participating in other religions celebrations. That is quite rare. people are really friendly.

I wanted to show what shopping and eating in KL looks like....but this computer is not working with me.....so no pics anymore. The shopping is so different....If you enter a shop, someone will immediately come up to you to be your personal assistent. They take the clothes you want to try and put them in the fitting room, ready for you to try on. This way you will not struggle holding everything you want to fitt and still try to look at other clothes. If clothes fall from the reck on the ground, they will straight away take it out off your hand and place it back on the reck. If you decide not to buy anything, people will still be friendly to you (most of 'em anyway) and smile you goodbye instead of making a face or not being able to hide their feelings of hmmmm let's say dissapointment. Different world. I just came from a shopping mall, I'm not kidding I need a map of the place in order not to get lost......it is huge.....I kept reminding myself which way to go back....

Traffic ligts. Different world as well. In some places in South America there is a little white man who tells you you can walk and there is a sign which mentiones the number if seconds you have left to cross the street. In Australia the green man tells you you can cross and after that there is a little red man who blinks maybe even more than half a minute so you know it is still safe to cross. When the man stops blinking you know you have to stay put or walk faster. In Asia, there is the green dude, but when the green dude stops walking you start running.

I called the person who is connected (and is also the translator) with the astrologer (see beginning of weblog). He will try to make an appointment for me before I leave. Here's hoping it will work out. I am a bit nervous about that. But I feel it is something I have to do. I thought about it a long time, but I think I will regret it if I don't go. At least I tried going wheather it works out or not. And if not I will have to come back one day because it was not ment to be this time.

Today I visited a gallery place where every artist is working and showing their work in little huts. I sat down with a women artist for a while as it was raining and she told me a bit about her work and techniques. A lot of collectors come to that place to buy work. Then after I went to visit the Petronas towers from up close. And up close it was. I could not even manage to get a decent picture of it from the distance I was standing (I am only bringing the snapshot camera). They are huge but very impressive. They look cool too. And by night, it is just an awesom sight!

I will get my a massage, they are just the best in Asia. And the street in front (or behind :-)) the hostel has these little foodstands which come alive at night...It is buzzing then and the food you can get, it is just too much and some is too different. For example I will not (yet) order frog (too strange) but if someone else was having it I would try a tiny piece. And I will also not eat sharkfin. If you love Asian food this little street is paradise. So off to paradise I go!
